Based on responses from more than 300 remote workers across 40+ countries, the survey explores what draws digital nomads and remote workers to Greece—and keeps them coming back.
ATHENS, GREECE — Global Nomad Pass (GNP) and WORKFROMGREECE.GR, an initiative by Marketing Greece, today released the results of a joint survey of long-stay travelers who claimed their free 1-year GNP membership (courtesy of WORKFROMGREECE.GR, valued at USD $79.99) while working remotely from Greece. The findings offer one of the clearest pictures yet of how remote workers actually experience the country and they conclude: Greece has become one of the world’s most compelling destinations to live and work from.
Respondents rated Greece highly across nearly every dimension that matters to this audience, including natural landscapes, climate, and cultural experiences. For a country competing against destinations like Bali, Lisbon, and Chiang Mai for this audience, that’s a strong signal that Greece’s appeal goes well beyond price or visa policy.
“Greece isn’t winning on discounts alone,” said Safir Jamal, CEO of Global Nomad Pass. “It’s winning because the experience itself, the landscapes, the culture, and the way locals welcome people in — all of it holds up once someone actually lives it. You can’t manufacture that with a marketing campaign. All we’re doing is giving people a reason to go deeper once they arrive.”
“Our partnership with Global Nomad Pass has a dual purpose.” said Nikos Diamantopoulos, General Manager of Marketing Greece. “On one hand, we wanted to encourage this community to actively give back, adding real value to Greece’s local communities and economy during their stay. On the other, we set out to validate, through research, what genuinely sets our country apart, straight from the digital nomads‘ own experience. What we found is that Greece’s strongest asset isn’t any single feature, it’s the whole way of life. The landscapes, the climate, the culture, and the genuine warmth of the welcome people receive here all come together into something that’s simply very hard to find anywhere else.”
A GLOBAL AUDIENCE, ON TARGET
The initiative drew a highly international respondent base spanning Europe, North America, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. While 64.7% of respondents claimed their pass during their time in Greece, 35.3% claimed it before arriving, on the basis of having a confirmed flight booking to Greece in the near future. Among survey respondents, there was strong representation from the United States, United Kingdom, Italy, Canada, Australia, Germany, and more than 40 other nationalities.
The passholder profile who completed the survey was the following: professionals aged 25–44 working as freelancers (30.4%), business owners (28.4%), or remote employees (34.5%). More than one-fifth of all passholders either pursued or plan to pursue Greece’s Digital Nomad Visa or Residence Permit pathways, pointing to sustained demand for the country’s remote work migration framework.
WHAT’S WINNING PEOPLE OVER
Respondents rated Greece highly across the board: natural landscapes (78% Good/Excellent), cultural experiences (76%), climate (75%), interaction with locals and “philoxenia” (70%), English proficiency (66%), safety (66%), and value for money (64%).
Transportation, health services, and accommodation options remain the areas respondents flagged most often for improvement.
WHERE THEY GO, HOW THEY WORK
Athens is pointed out as the top destination (28.8%), followed by Chania (14.7%), Thessaloniki (12%), Corfu (8.8%), Ioannina (6.9%), and Kalamata (6.6%). Work habits lean flexible and home-based, with 61.1% working mainly from their accommodation, 20% from cafés, and 12.6% from co-working spaces — a smaller segment that represents a growth opportunity as more long-stay travelers discover destinations beyond Athens.
Apart from work, respondents are deeply engaged with local life: visiting cultural sites (32.6%), trying local gastronomy (29.4%), socializing with locals (15.7%), and connecting with fellow travelers (12.8%) topped the list of favorite activities — the exact behaviors GNP’s network of hand-picked local businesses across Athens, Thessaloniki, Chania, Ioannina, and Kalamata was designed to encourage.
DEEPENING THE PARTNERSHIP
The results also land at a meaningful moment for the partnership. In January 2026, AEGEAN Airlines joined the program, adding a 20% discount on a round-trip flight across its network for every GNP member, on top of the local business discounts already in place. It’s a rare example of a national airline, a tourism organization, and a private rewards platform aligning around the same idea: a destination’s value is built from the ground up, one local business and one flight at a time.
